As a nonbeliever, I felt there must be more to life than what I was experiencing. I felt there had to be more to life than being born, gaining an education, getting married, and then dying! I longed to find freedom from the stress that bombarded my life, but there seemed to be no light at the end of the tunnel.
In my search for freedom, and inner peace, I examined the lives of people who professed to be Christians. I thought, perhaps their church taught them how to enjoy a better quality of life than what I was experiencing. Other than their church affiliation, I discovered their lives were similar to mine, and in many cases worse! Some had marriage and financial problems. Often their faces revealed stress. Some cursed. Others cut corners in business. After concluding that the churches had little to offer, I turned to the world.
The world also provided no relief from my dilemma. It didn’t take me long to realize the excitement over the new car, an exotic vacation, or a geographical fix was short-lived. Once the first car payment arrived, or the photos of the last vacation were put away, it wasn't long before I was looking forward to another toy, or another vacation.
One day on my way to work, I pulled the car over to the side of the road and for the first time in my life I actually talked to God. It wasn’t a lengthy conversation. I simply sent out an SOS request. I asked Him to show me what I needed to do to experience freedom in my life. At the time, I wondered if my words actually got beyond the roof of the car. I thought perhaps God was too busy running the universe to be concerned with my insignificant problems.
A few days later several unique things began happening. My wife Ruth showed me a newspaper advertisement announcing a musical evening at one of the local churches. Since we both enjoyed gospel music we decided to attend. As it turned out, the highlight of the service was not so much the music, but the sermon delivered by two visiting evangelists who were twins. During the service, God honored my SOS plea for help in a way I least expected. Sitting there listening intently, I realized what I needed to do in order to find freedom from stress and worry. I realized I needed someone more qualified than myself to manage my life. That someone was Jesus Christ! After attending those meetings for several nights, I made a life changing decision by inviting Christ to become my Savior and take over the management of my life.
This decision took place in 1971, and so far the journey has been anything but dull. Over the years there have been many positive changes in my life and the journey continues even as I write. As each negative was flushed out of my life, it's as if another prison bar was removed. I began to experience less stress, worry, and anger. In 1971 the Lord definitely heard my SOS cry!
"In my distress I called upon the Lord,
and cried out to my God;
He heard my voice from His temple,
and my cry came before Him,
even to His ears"
I had no church background and had little understanding of the Bible. In the past I made several attempts at reading the Word of God, but after reading a couple chapters, I placed it back on the shelf. Never in my life had I read such a dull book. However, after my conversion, I suddenly had an insatiable appetite for the Word. In my innocence I made a deal with the Lord. I told Him I'd study the Bible and related Christian books each morning until noon for the next two years. His part of the deal was to bless my business as I went to work for the rest of the day. It was a deal the Lord honored.
Shortly after becoming a Christian I was asked to teach a weekly Bible study in our home. The group consisted of a few new Christians, along with their nonbelieving friends who were taking a close look at Christianity. With much effort I managed to stay one page ahead of the group. People got saved and strengthened. Because of my effort at preparing lessons I likely grew the most.
During the past thirty-nine years I have taught
home Bible studies in Canada, the US, and Mexico.
I am currently teaching a group in Florida.

Rev. Dr. Dean, Pastor- If you are looking for a man with a fresh perspective to lead your church to another level, consider inviting Jack to come in and lead a series of teaching sessions. Our church thoroughly enjoyed the time. He is competent in handling the scriptures, and has great insight about Biblical truths that are often neglected or simply not taught by design in so many of our churches today. You will not be disappointed if you embark on such a course.
Connie - I can't put the book Under the Cloud down!
David (a Sunday School teacher for Young Marrieds) - It is a great teaching resource that I know is reliable. There are specific topics that I can easily access for use in my class like "The Rock" and I especially liked the section on "Educating the Flesh."
Mary Anne - Under the Cloud is not just another man's opinion, it is all based on Scripture.
Antoinette (who has already purchased over 30 books) - As I give the book to friends and clients, I say to them "put down all the other books you are reading and read this one! I promise you Under the Cloud will change your life."
Julie - I started reading Under the Cloud yesterday and felt enveloped in love, as well as wonderful memories of being taught amazing and powerful truths through two incredible servants of God. Thank You!
Name withheld by us - I will send my husband and son off to the Middle East in Sept. for their second deployment with a copy of your book. (Likely to Afghanistan).
Karen - I am really enjoying your book. It sure is one that I will go back to. I have already marked it up.
John & Jane - We are both enjoying your book so much. Please bring us 10 more signed copies on Thursday.
Rob - My only criticism of the book is that I eventually ran out of pages.
Sally - Your book is fantastic! I just wish I had read it 20 years ago. It would have answered a lot of my questions.
Wayne - I loved the section on "Rigged Fights."
