Introduction:

The gospel of Matthew is viewed by many Bible scholars as being the best teaching gospel. In this gospel Matthew's attempts to convince fellow Jews that Jesus was the Messiah—the fulfillment of the Old Testament Passover Feast and the Feast of Firstfruits.

Throughout this series on the book of Matthew we will examine the life of Christ from cradle to grave. The following are some of the key points we will address:

  • Why the virgin birth was vital.
  • Is there eternal security?
  • Why Calvary played a vital part in our redemption.
  • Why the resurrection of Christ was also vital for our redemption.
  • God's formula for experiencing the abundant Christian life.
  • Experiencing freedom from such bondage as worry, fear, anger, and depression.

Matthew
Bible Study Lesson 1

In this lesson we will discover:

  • Why the virgin birth was imperative.
  • How Jesus gave birth to his mother.
  • How Mary was aware her Son would die prematurely.
  • How Joseph and Mary knew what color to paint the baby room.
  • The three different responses to Christ's birth.
  • The significance of the three gifts the wise men presented to Jesus.

NOTE: For additional information on Christ's birth go to Birth of Christ.

Matthew
Bible Study Lesson 2

In this lesson we will examine the following:

  • How John the Baptist was the warm-up act for Jesus. In Las Vegas, before the main entertainer takes center stage there is usually a warm-up act that precedes the main performance. The purpose of the warm-up act is to motivate the audience to receive the main act with excitement and enthusiasm. John the Baptist was Christ's warm-up act!
  • The significance of the two baptisms that are mentioned in Scripture.
  • Why Jesus was baptized.
  • What Satan hoped to accomplish by tempting Christ in the wilderness.
  • What method of sharing the gospel has proven to be the most effective.
  • Good speakers often use power words to capture the attention of their audience. In this lesson we will see Jesus used a power word that would have had His audience sitting on the edge of their seats.

Of the many prophecies Jesus fulfilled three stand out as being vital for God's redemption plan to become a reality. If any of these three prophecies were not fulfilled everyone would still be abiding in their sins. In this lesson we will examine the significance of these three prophecies.

In this lesson we will also learn what Christians must do in order to avoid being sucked into today's lukewarm Church age.

Matthew
Bible Study Lesson 6

This lesson is about leprosy. It is interesting that leprosy is mentioned in Scripture more than any other disease—over seventy times. There is an obvious reason for this. Leprosy is symbolic of a dreadful disease that contaminated every person who departed from their mother's womb. That disease is our vile flesh!

King David referred to this condition when he wrote—"I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me." Paul was referring to this condition when he wrote—"I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells.

Once we have a grasp of what Jesus is teaching in this lesson we will have an understanding of why we display such fleshly sins as fear, worry, and anger. We will also see how we can find freedom from such bondage.

Matthew
Bible Study Lesson 8

"Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins,
or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled,
and the wineskins are ruined.
But they put new wine into new wineskins,
and both are preserved"

Matthew 9:17

Over 50 years ago, William Barclay, the Christian author, wrote, "The most inflexible organization in the world is the church." I wonder what his view would be of today's churches?

When the Lord spoke of today's Church age, He didn't refer to it in a complementary way, but said this Church age would be lukewarm, and make Him sick to His stomach (Revelation 3:16).

If we are going to avoid getting sucked into this lukewarm rut it is going to call for flexibility on our part.

Matthew
Bible Study Lesson 9

"I am searching for that which every man
seeks—peace and rest"

Dante

Throughout history man has gone to great lengths to experience inner peace, but with few exceptions, man has looked to the wrong source to achieve that desire.

Inner peace is not achieved by doing, but is a result of beingbeing in the right spiritual condition. If you have a desire to experience peace in the midst of tribulation, then you will benefit from this lesson.

"If there is to be inner peace, it will come
through being and not through achieving"

Henry Miller

"By their fruits you will

"
Matthew 7:20

In Christ's day it was customary for rabbis to use parables to teach a spiritual truth. In this  lesson we find Jesus using a parable of a farmer sowing seed to teach a spiritual lesson about Christians displaying spiritual fruit.

If today's Christian community is to be fruitful there are three things that must be experienced. This lesson addresses those three requirements.

  • Who is the current ruler of this planet.
  • What Jesus owns in this world.
  • What God views as being the most holy place on this planet.
  • Why Jesus is referred to as the Kinsman Redeemer.
  • Why the name of a believer can never be blotted out of the Lamb's Book of Life because of improper conduct.

Matthew
Bible Study Lesson 13

In this lesson we find Jesus drawing apart from the crowds in order to take the spiritual temperature of the disciples. If the Christian movement was to move forward in a positive direction, Jesus needed to know what He meant to them. He asked them the question, "Who do you say I am?"

Throughout the world the name Jesus has a different meaning to people. Some view Him as being a good religious man. Many are more familiar with the name Buddha, or Mohammed, than they are with the name Jesus. Christians view Him as being the Lamb of God who dealt with sin. A minority of Christians view Him as being not only their Savior, but also as their Lord.

If Jesus asked you, "Who do you say I am," what would be your reply? In this lesson we will discover what Jesus should mean to us.

Matthew
Bible Study Lesson 14

In this lesson we find Jesus, along with three of His disciples, attending a summit meeting, where they are joined by two Old Testament deceased saints—Moses and Elijah.

In this lesson we will examine the following details of that meeting:

  • Why Christ's forthcoming death was referred to as His being deceased. In this lesson we will see what the word deceased actually means.
  • Where Moses and Elijah had been housed prior to their arriving on the Mount of Transfiguration.
  • Why Moses and Elijah were invited.
  • Where Moses and Elijah went after departing from the mount.
  • Why the disciples wanted to set up camp on the mount.
  • Why it was imperative that the disciples return to the war zone.
  • Why Jesus instructed the disciples not to tell others what transpired on the mount until after His resurrection.

"Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory,
for the marriage of the Lamb has come,
and His wife has made herself ready...
Blessed are those who are called to the
marriage supper of the Lamb
"
Revelation 19:7, 9

Whenever Christ teaches a parable there is always a spiritual application hidden in the teaching. In this parable of a Jewish royal wedding we will examine following spiritual truths:

  • How the parable speaks of the Royal Wedding that will take place in heaven following the Rapture.
  • What the dress code is for attending the heavenly wedding feast.
  • Where the wedding guest list is located.

  • The priesthood of believers (1 Peter 2:9, Revelation 5:10).
  • What is a Christian's #1 ministry.
  • A lesson about eternal security.
  • How there are many counterfeit Christians seated in today's fundamental pews.

Matthew
Bible Study Lesson 17

In this lesson we will examine the following events that took place after the Last Supper:

  • Why crossing the Brook Kidron would have reminded Jesus of what was about to take place at Calvary.
  • What motivated Judas to give Jesus the betrayal kiss.
  • Why it was imperative for Jesus to be executed as a result of a Roman execution, rather then by the customary Jewish execution—stoning.
  • Why the apostle Paul wrote, "Christ, our Passover was sacrificed for us."
  • What Jesus was actually saying when He told Pilate, "My kingdom is not of this world.

Matthew
Bible Study Lesson 18

During my lifetime there have been many events that have captured the attention of large crowds. For example:

  • Thousands filled the streets of downtown New York to celebrate the end of World War II.
  • Millions around the globe were glued to their TV's to watch Neil Armstrong make that historic step onto the moon's surface.
  • Millions watch their TV's in disbelief at the destruction of the World Trade Towers.
  • Each year thousands gather to watch grown men run up and down a field in pursuit of a leather ball. One needs to reserve well in advance in order to secure a seat at the Super Bowl.

Two thousand years ago the most important event in the history of the world took place, yet the event didn't attract Super Bowl crowds.

In this lesson we will examine the following events that took place at Calvary;

  • The three different groups of people who witnessed the crucifixion.
  • What motivated each group to attend.
  • Why Jesus announced from the cross, "It is finished."
  • What the apostle John meant when he said Jesus was the fulfillment of Scripture.
  • The significance of the veil that was rent in the Jerusalem temple.

Matthew
Bible Study Lesson 19

"Christ is risen from the dead, and has become
the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
For since by man came death, by Man also
came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam
all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.
But each one in his own order:
Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are
Christ's at His coming"

1 Corinthians 15:20-23

In this final lesson we will examine the following key points:

  • How Jesus became the fulfillment of the Old Testament Feast of Firstfruits.
  • Why Jesus remained in the tomb for precisely three days, rather than returning to heaven immediately after His crucifixion.
  • Why Paul said Satan, and the demons, wouldn't have crucified Christ had they known about the resurrection.
  • How resurrection day was a full-calendared day for Jesus. In this lesson we will examine what transpired at each of His appointments.
  • Why the two disciples suddenly believed in the resurrection of Christ when they spotted the folded napkin in the empty tomb.
  • Why the events following the resurrection would convince any open-minded jury that something unique took place three days after the crucifixion of Christ.
  • Why there was no grave marker placed at the tomb of Christ. Throughout history it has been customary to place a marker at a grave in order to identify the deceased.

NOTE: I recommend listening to the lessons on the tabernacle as I view this series as being one of the most valuable teachings in the Bible. The tabernacle lessons gives us God's formula (not man's) for being justified, sanctified (maturing as a Christian), having an effective prayer life, having an appetite for the Word of God, and for being a positive witness for Christ.

Rev. Dr. Dean, Pastor- If you are looking for a man with a fresh perspective to lead your church to another level, consider inviting Jack to come in and lead a series of teaching sessions. Our church thoroughly enjoyed the time. He is competent in handling the scriptures, and has great insight about Biblical truths that are often neglected or simply not taught by design in so many of our churches today. You will not be disappointed if you embark on such a course.

Connie - I can't put the book Under the Cloud down!

David (a Sunday School teacher for Young Marrieds) - It is a great teaching resource that I know is reliable. There are specific topics that I can easily access for use in my class like "The Rock" and I especially liked the section on "Educating the Flesh."

Mary Anne - Under the Cloud is not just another man's opinion, it is all based on Scripture.

Antoinette (who has already purchased over 30 books) - As I give the book to friends and clients, I say to them "put down all the other books you are reading and read this one! I promise you Under the Cloud will change your life."

Julie - I started reading Under the Cloud yesterday and felt enveloped in love, as well as wonderful memories of being taught amazing and powerful truths through two incredible servants of God. Thank You!

Name withheld by us - I will send my husband and son off to the Middle East in Sept. for their second deployment with a copy of your book. (Likely to Afghanistan).

Karen - I am really enjoying your book. It sure is one that I will go back to. I have already marked it up.

John & Jane - We are both enjoying your book so much. Please bring us 10 more signed copies on Thursday.

Rob - My only criticism of the book is that I eventually ran out of pages.

Sally - Your book is fantastic! I just wish I had read it 20 years ago. It would have answered a lot of my questions.

Wayne - I loved the section on "Rigged Fights."
